Arashi flung his beautiful red-gold head into the air, forelock falling over deep brown, thoughtful eyes. His nostrils quivered, scenting the air that was his kingdom, his home. A gull cawed a taunt at him from overhead, but the big stallion hardly flinched. Sea rats such as that could have no affect on the son of thunder, child of the clouds.
This stallion was the second generation of rulers on this fair beach, and he had large shoes to fill, with his father being the great Ra'd, a good friend of the late empress. He felt a pang in his chest, at the loss of his father, and at the disappearance of his half-sister, Aila. Yet, the joy that was still in his life was enough. Said joy whinnied a greeting to her brother, trotting up beside him.
"Getsuei, where have you been? I was getting worried." The five year old mare, just a year younger than her brother, snorted. "I am no child, Arashi. I can take care of myself. Besides, I was with mother." Arashi smiled a bit as he looked back over his shoulder. The eleven year old mare walked calmly out of the trees, her strawberry-roan coat glinting in the sun. The amber of her eyes danced, despite her old age. She whickered in greeting, coming to stand beside her silver daughter.
Arashi turned his head back to the fading sun, taking in the splendor as it melted across the water. He sighed, looking at the two mares. "It's beautiful, isn't it? Our home. This place." Suei nodded, and Cloud said gently, "It has been beautiful for as long as I've lived here. Your father and Fluer made it so. They could not create the land itself, but they made it feel like home. What you feel now is what remains of them." The old mare smiled, then turned her back to the others. "It's time to sleep, my children," she teased lightly, as if they were still foals. "I'm tired, and I can't leave you two to look after yourselves." Suei chuckled, then followed her mother. Arashi stayed in place, saying, "Go on without me. It will only be a few more minutes." They went on, leaving the stallion of Sandy Cove to ponder his memories.
